What Does the Kitchen Scullery Do?

The Kitchen Scullery is key to maintaining hygiene and cleanliness in the kitchen. You will support chefs and the kitchen crew by making sure all dishes, kitchen tools, and equipment are properly washed and sanitized. What Are the Main Duties?

As a Kitchen Scullery staff member, your daily tasks will include:

  • Washing, rinsing, and sanitizing plates, glasses, utensils, pots, and pans used during food preparation and service
  • Cleaning kitchen equipment like ovens, stoves, grills, and cutting boards
  • Keeping kitchen surfaces, floors, and storage areas clean and tidy all day
  • Taking care of waste disposal and recycling, making sure these areas meet hygiene standards
  • Assisting chefs with simple food prep such as peeling and washing ingredients if needed
  • Ensuring clean utensils and cookware are always available for smooth kitchen operation
  • Monitoring cleaning supplies and notifying supervisors when stocks need replenishing
  • Following strict food safety and hygiene guidelines at all times
  • Handling cleaning chemicals carefully and using protective gear properly
  • Working well with kitchen colleagues and service staff to maintain good kitchen flow
  • Reporting any maintenance or safety issues quickly to supervisors
  • Keeping a professional appearance, following grooming and uniform rules
  • Completing cleaning and organizing duties before the end of your shift, leaving the kitchen ready for the next team

What Skills and Experience Are Needed?

  • Previous experience in a kitchen, hospitality, or cleaning job is helpful but not required
  • Basic understanding of hygiene, cleaning, and food safety standards is important
  • Strong attention to detail to keep the kitchen sparkling clean
  • Ability to work fast and efficiently in a busy environment
  • Being a team player who helps wherever needed and communicates well

What Education Is Required?

The minimum education level is Grade 12 or a National Certificate.
