💼 Job Purpose

As a Trainee Train Assistant, your main job is to help the Train Driver operate the train safely and efficiently. You will assist in moving different types of trains, ensuring that cargo is delivered on time and in good condition.

🏆 Job Responsibilities

Here’s what you’ll be doing:

✅ Sign in at the start of your shift and get your tasks assigned.
✅ Prepare the locomotive by gathering necessary tools and equipment.
✅ Clean the working area and ensure everything is in place.
✅ Assist in starting the locomotive and perform brake tests.
✅ Help couple and dispatch the train before departure.
✅ Operate communication devices like walkie-talkies and radios.
✅ Inspect the train before departure to ensure everything is safe and working.
✅ Attach and detach train vehicles when necessary.
✅ Follow shunting instructions to place or remove trucks from the siding.
✅ Observe train movement and signals to ensure safety.
✅ Assist the Train Driver in emergencies and report any incidents.
✅ Complete administrative duties, including maintaining a train journal.

🎓 Qualifications & Requirements

To qualify for this role, you need:

📌 Grade 12 certificate with Mathematics and/or Physical Science.
📌 Be at least 1.6m tall (required for safety reasons).
📌 Be physically fit – must be able to carry heavy objects.
📌 Good vision, hearing, and mental fitness (verified through medical tests).
📌 Be at least 21 years old (as per safety regulations).
📌 Pass a psychomotor ability test (assessed through Vienna Testing System).

📚 Training Provided

If selected, you’ll go through theoretical and practical training to become a certified Train Assistant. This will include:
