The City of Cape Town invites suitably qualified applicants to apply for the Metro Police and Traffic Learnership Programme (SS 26/25 Ext.). What is This Learnership All About?
The Metro Police and Traffic Learnership is designed to give unemployed young people in Cape Town real training and experience in law enforcement. It’s run by the City’s Public Safety Training College and lasts for 18 months. If you’re accepted, you will be trained in road traffic law enforcement, and you’ll also complete a certified skills program.
This is not just a classroom course — it’s a hands-on program where you’ll go through real-life training, including fitness drills, teamwork, and dealing with stressful situations. Learners are paid R34.91 per hour while they’re training.
Who Can Apply?
To qualify, you must meet the following:
- Be between the ages of 18 and 34 years old
- Be currently unemployed (students and EPWP workers can also apply)
- Have a Grade 12 (matric) certificate
- Be a permanent resident of Cape Town (you must show proof)
- Be fluent in English and one other official language
- Have no criminal record (your background will be checked)
- Be medically and physically fit — this job includes intense training
- Have a valid driver’s license (manual Code B)
- Be able to work under pressure and in teams
- No visible tattoos when wearing uniform
Physical Fitness Requirements
All shortlisted candidates will need to pass tough physical tests. These include:
- A 2.4 km run (under 11 minutes for males, 13 minutes for females)
- Push-ups: 30 in 60 seconds
- Sit-ups: 30 in 60 seconds
- Deadweight carry: 2 x 25kg weights over 100m
- Tyre drag over 20m
- 10 shuttle runs in 60 seconds
- 2.1m wall jump
- Comfort swim (any stroke)
- Motorcycle reach test
Pregnant applicants will not be allowed to take part in the physical assessments.
Other Tests You Must Pass
Besides fitness, you’ll also need to:
- Pass a written test and interview
- Submit fingerprints for a criminal background check
- Pass a driver assessment
- Undergo a drug test and City medical evaluation
- Follow the rules of the Public Safety Training College
Important Rules to Know
- Being accepted into the learnership does not mean you’re guaranteed a job after training.
- You’ll need to wear a uniform, work shifts, and sometimes work outdoors in bad weather.
- You may be placed anywhere in the City of Cape Town.
- You must be willing to undergo regular fitness and psychological assessments.
- No one working in this learnership can run a private business without written permission from the City.
- If you previously worked in government and were dismissed due to misconduct, you may not apply.
- If you have a health issue that stops you from completing the training, you will be removed from the program.
