Transnet Freight Rail Is Hiring Trainee Yard Officials – No Experience Needed, Just Matric!

Transnet Freight Rail invites suitably qualified applicants to apply for their Trainee Yard Official Vacancies. The closing date for applications is not specified, so early submission is highly advised.

Are you a school leaver with Matric and ready to start a serious career in the railway industry? Transnet Freight Rail is calling on young, hardworking individuals to join their Trainee Yard Official Programme. This is your chance to be trained by one of South Africa’s biggest state-owned enterprises and work towards a job that offers long-term stability and growth.

If you’re someone who enjoys working in an outdoor, hands-on environment, and you’re eager to learn and grow, then this opportunity could be your perfect match. Transnet doesn’t require you to have work experience — they’ll train you from scratch.

What Is a Trainee Yard Official?

A Trainee Yard Official is someone who is learning to control the movement of trains and railcars in a yard or station. This role is critical in keeping the trains running on time and safely. You’ll be trained both in the classroom and on the ground.

You will need to complete all the required modules in the training program, and once you pass, you’ll be officially qualified to work as a Yard Official at Transnet Freight Rail.

What You Will Learn and Do

As a Trainee Yard Official, you’ll:

  • Complete theoretical training in a set time frame.
  • Complete practical, hands-on training within the required period.
  • Learn how to operate rail equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Handle job responsibilities that match the company’s safety rules and vision.
  • Keep full records of your progress, training experience, and learning (your portfolio of evidence).

This structured training helps you gain both knowledge and real experience, preparing you for a strong career with Transnet.

Minimum Requirements

To apply, you must meet the following:

  • Matric (Grade 12) certificate is required.
  • Must pass a psychological screening test.
  • Must pass a medical test, which includes checks on eyesight and hearing.
  • Must be computer literate.
  • Must be physically fit.
  • Must complete and pass all training stages – theory and practical.

No previous work experience is required, but a strong willingness to learn and stay committed throughout the training is a must.

Skills and Knowledge You’ll Gain

During your training, you will gain knowledge in:

  • Shunting procedures and how trains operate.
  • Understanding the layout of yards and sidings.
  • Working with hazardous materials safely.
  • Using radio train order systems.
  • Learning local rail rules and high voltage safety.
  • Understanding railway geography and operations.

You will also learn important skills like:

  • Problem solving
  • Teamwork
  • Communication (including bilingual communication)
  • Handling stress
  • Writing reports
  • Conflict resolution
  • Observation and attention to detail

These skills are not only useful for your job at Transnet — they’re valuable in any future career path you might choose.

Attributes Transnet Looks For

To succeed in this role, you should be:

  • Trustworthy and responsible.
  • Focused on safety.
  • Good at working on your own.
  • Someone who pays attention to small details.
  • Willing to work shifts, including nights or weekends.
  • Physically and mentally strong.

Employment Equity

Transnet is committed to creating equal opportunities. They prefer candidates who are part of designated groups, in line with their Employment Equity Plan. If you live within 200 km of Worcester, you will be given extra preference — so don’t miss this chance if you’re nearby.
